B/CS Second Graders Get an Early Christmas

It looked and sounded like any Aggie game day. But these buses didn't bring a rowdy crowd of football fans, instead they brought an anxious crowd of second graders. Over 2 thousand Bryan/College Station Students made their way to Kyle field in an effort to raise awareness for helmet safety. Members of the Aggie athletic teams showed the kids why wearing a helmet is so important and they where listing.

"I learned that wearing a helmet is very important," said second grader, Harper.

"You might crack your neck or break most of your teeth," said Ronald, a second grader from College Station. "So you don't get hurt," said second grader, Katie.

Dr. Andrew de Jong came up with the idea and with the help of Aggie Brittany Lentz, the Hard Hats for Little Heads program has become a reality. "It's a dream come true. I really believe in kids health and taking care of kids. This is bigger than I ever could have expected," said de Jong. "To see the reactions of all the different demonstrations is definitely a rewarding experience," said Lentz. And to top things off, every 2nd grader in B/CS got a free bike helmet to cap off the program.

"I'm very excited." said College Station 2nd grader Chase.

Graham got to attend this bike safety field trip yesterday, and yes, he received a really cool bike helmet to keep! When I stopped by his school after the field trip, lots of 2nd graders were wearing their helmets at recess, just because they thought the helmets looked cool! 3 cheers for bike safety field trips. Now we just need to get Graham a bike.
